About this Talk

In this session, Amy Plummer from St. Mary’s University will present her paper on using ‘hashtag activism’ on Instagram to raise awareness of modern slavery and human trafficking. After this intervention, Brandon Behlendorf and Brian Nussbaum will present their findings on the life cycles of illicit networks and how they fail, as well as the kinds of vulnerabilities that might be exploited by law enforcement to disrupt them. Victoria Wozniak-Cole will deliver a presentation on human trafficking victims’ experiences in criminal proceedings through the use of trauma psychology and narrative victimology. The session will conclude with a presentation by Bret Windhauser, who will speak about the important role that human smuggling plays in performing the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.
