About this Talk
This roundtable discussion session will explore the impact of organised crime on urban development, governance and democracy. It also introduces GI’s new research stream on Cities and Illicit Economies. It includes a diverse set of panellists that can provide various perspectives on the policy challenges related to urban violence and illicit economies. Emma Elfversson will explore the growing policy and academic attention being paid to urban violence; Joana Monteiro will speak on the uniquely violent context of Rio de Janeiro and the lessons from decades of criminal and police violence there; Santiago Tobón will explore the challenge of criminal governance and its impact on urban security and democracy; and Martin Bisp will speak about the role of civil society organisations in preventing or reducing violence, drawing from his experience at the Empire Fighting Chance charity in Bristol, UK.
