About this Talk

This regular panel session will discuss the changing landscape of illicit trade through the lens of illicit arms trafficking, illegal trade in natural resources and cross-border illicit waste trafficking. An analysis of 3D firearm proliferation in Latin America, its impact on Latin American criminal organizations, and the rise of violence on the continent will be provided. The role of geospatial intelligence in light weapons trafficking will be discussed with a specific focus on Atlantic routes, from North Atlantic to South America. The session will also focus on illicit waste trafficking by analyzing the global trafficking network of multiple types of waste and identifying the main drivers of each illegal waste trade. Mafia groups involvement in gold supply chains will be part of the discussion, as organized crime groups have used gold mining, trading, refining and manufacturing as a means to diversify and launder the proceeds of crime.
