Illicit economies and (in)security in South Asia
A Talk by Anne-Therese Heckendorff , Aaron Magunna , Siosi Tameifuna and Yoana Barakova
About this Talk
Illicit economies feed into and are interlinked with a variety of patronage networks throughout South Asia. Prevalent illicit economies in the region include but are not restricted to drug production hubs, arms running, and human trafficking. The resurgence of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan and the coup in Myanmar have reinforced the importance of illicit economies for various political regimes in South Asia. This session explores how illicit economies in South Asia interact with regional (in)security via case studies discussed by experts on the region.
