The Stories Within: Encounters with South African prisons and its people
A Talk by Lin van Schalkwyk , Nanine Steenkamp , Sigrid Raets and Judy-Ann Cilliers
About this Talk
The book describes interviews with many existing and ex-gang members on what gangsterism in South Africa constitutes, specifically regarding the factors that led them towards and away from gangsterism. The reign of gangs within communities has long exceeded its influence on a micro (individual identity) and mezzo (community) level - clearly filtering into macro-level politics and policy making. The similarities and overlaps between gangs and organized crime in the South African context becomes clear through the gangs’ close involvement with drug trafficking and illegal trafficking of arms, mother key attributes.
