Illicit Trafficking of Firearms and Gender: Connecting the Dots
A Talk by Ana Paula Oliveira , Anna Alvazzi del Frate , Rosa Logar and Ingeborg Geyer
About this Talk
Given that gun owners and users are predominantly male, issues surrounding firearms are often closely tied to masculinity. Women's roles, on the other hand, are frequently associated with the negative consequences of firearm misuse, including being victims of armed violence or being involved in trafficking as members or supporters of organized crime groups. However, firearms-related concerns affect all genders, including in the areas of prevention and control of illicit trafficking. Women and girls are not just victims; they can also play crucial roles as agents of change. This event will explore how gender can be integrated into efforts to combat illicit firearms trafficking, with a special emphasis on the role of women as change-makers. Additionally, speakers will discuss the links between international agendas on women's issues and arms control, particularly in relation to specific aspects of firearms trafficking.
