The session will begin by screening a 13-minute segment of The Vertical Border (Mexico, 2022, dir. Sonja Wolf), a feature documentary that looks at criminal violence as a driver of forced migration from Central America. The panel features gang scholar José Miguel Cruz, journalist and author Deborah Bonello as well as the documentary maker, Sonja Wolf. Panel members will discuss the dynamics and impact of gangs in Central America and suggest ways of reducing gang violence.
