Blue Organized and Corporate Crimes: Perspectives on Harms Against the Ocean and Marine Ecosystems

A Talk by Emiline Smith , Angus Nurse and Elliot Doornbos

About this Talk

This roundtable discussion examines the relative failure of criminology and justice systems to consider crimes against the ocean and marine ecosystems. In particular it explores how organised groups and corporations commit various ocean-focused harms whilst taking advantage of the perception of marine ecosystems as relatively unpoliced exploitable natural resource. Our focus is on both crimes (such as illegal and unregulated fishing, shark fin trafficking, illegal whaling) and harms (such as pollution and ecosystem degradation), both situated within various conceptions on 'organised' activity. The roundtable examines how best to achieve effective and sustainable countermeasures.
