About this speaker

Dr. Simeon Igbinedion is an Associate Professor of Law in the Department of Jurisprudence & International Law, Faculty of Law, University of Lagos. He obtained his Ph.D. and LL.M. in Law from Gakushuin University, Tokyo in 2007 and 2004 respectively, B.L. Certification from the Nigerian Law School (1999), and LL.B. from the University of Lagos in 1998. His academic interests include Jurisprudence & Legal Theory, International Human Rights Law, Public International Law, International Economic Law and Transnational Crimes while his professional interests relate to grand corruption, money laundering, assets recovery and repatriation of recovered assets from custodial states to victim states. He has the experience of having imparted knowledge related to transnational crimes in post-graduate students of Criminology and Human Rights. He collaborates with other academics at the UK-based Corporate Crimes Observatory (CCO). Apart from being a consultant on assets recovery and anti-money laundering compliance measures, Dr. Igbinedion periodically trains and consults for NGOs that engage in campaigns against corruption and advocacy for the restoration of assets plundered by politically exposed persons (PEPs) to their original state owners. Quite recently, between November 2021 and October 2022, he was a consultant on illicit financial flows (IFFs) to Nigeria’s foremost anti-corruption agency, Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC). And currently, he is part of a team engaged by ECOWAS to draft the Guidelines on Assets Recovery to facilitate the capacity of Member States to recover assets plundered from their territories.
