PATRICIA FIGUEROA, PhD, is a researcher at the Center of Gender Policies of the Autonomous University of Sinaloa. She belongs to Mexico's National Researchers System (Sistema Nacional de Investigadores) and is an associate member of the Sinaloan System of Researchers (Sistema Sinaloense de Investigadores). Author of the book Ética en Tiempos de Guerra y Narcotráfico. Relación Policía-Periodista (2017) and the book series about youth in violent context Juventud Cósmica (2020). Her background as a journalist in Sinaloa covering news related to violence, drug trafficking and corruption prompted her to study the problems that women and youth face in a territory higly influenced by narco-trafficking. Figueroa, born and raised in Culiacán, Sinaloa, has been part of the Exchange Visitor Program in the category of Research Scholar at the Institute of Latin American Studies at Columbia University in New York City, and recognized as a Leading Journalist by the U.S. State Department's Edward R. Murrow Program for Journalists. She has been recently appointed Under Secretary of Human Rights in the State of Sinaloa in Mexico.
