About this speaker

Nkechi is a researcher in financial crime regulation with a particular focus on the global south. She joined Lancaster University in January 2023. Before joining Lancaster, she taught at the University of Warwick and the University of Lincoln.

Her core research interest is in anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing (AML/CFT) law and policy. Her current research projects focus on the compliance challenges of African countries with the global AML/CFT standards in the face of their recent sanctioning. She has recently started looking at the linkage between AML/CFT governance and critical reporting actors (including lawyers, high value dealers, etc).

Nkechi has a track record of producing high quality research and facilitating impact. Her doctoral thesis was adjudged to be of high quality. It has been published as a monograph titledRegulating and Combating Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing: The Law in Emerging Economies (Routledge 2021). Given her interest in the compliance complexities of African countries, she am currently working on an edited book titled Global Anti-Money Laundering Regulation: Developing Countries Compliance Challenges (Routledge, 2024). She has also published in reputable peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Banking Regulation and the African Journal of Legal Studies. To foster impact-driven stakeholder engagement in my research area, she founded the Global South Dialogue on Economic Crime, an interdisciplinary platform for advancing dialogue, research, and capacity on economic and financial crimes.

Nkechi holds a PhD in Law and an LLM (with distinction) in International Economic Law from the University of Warwick. She is also a graduate of the Nigerian Law School and has been called to the Nigerian Bar.
