About this speaker

Mathew Charles, PhD is a social and creative ethnographer with a specific interest in organised crime and cultural criminology. His work focuses mainly on the recruitment and participation of youth in criminal activity, particularly in Latin America, as well in armed conflict. He’s also interested in the cultural capital, which forms and shapes the bonds within organised criminal structures and violent non-state armed actors. Using innovative and participatory methods, his research reimagines ethnography and creative ethnographic practice within contexts of (in)security, delinquency and criminal governance ‘at the edge’.
