Damian Platt

Damian Platt worked for eight years at the International Secretariat of Amnesty International in London and, subsequently, for more than ten years in Rio’s favelas. In 2011 he was awarded an MBE by the British Government, for “services to community development and human rights” in Rio de Janeiro. He began researching Rio’s ‘jogo do bicho’ mafias in 2012 for a Cambridge University master’s dissertation. In 2020 he published “Nothing by Accident: Brazil on the Edge”, a book describing the influence of these organisations on rule of law and democracy in Brazil.
